Daphne was a naiad who’d caught the attention of the god Apollo, who pursued her despite her rejection of him. She ran away from him and just as he wsa about to catch her, Daphne calls out to her father, a river god, to help her and he changes her into a laurel tree. Since than, Apollo wears a wreath of laurels around his head and has become one of his symbols.
